Prof. Dr. Ellen Hey
Ellen Hey is head of the Department and Professor of Public International Law. She has lectured at academic institutions in the Netherlands and abroad, including Argentina, China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, the United States, and Europe. She has worked for the Netherlands government, nongovernmental organizations, and international organizations, such as the European Union, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, the U.N. Development Program, the U.N. Environment Program, and the World Bank. Ellen Hey grew up in the Netherlands, Egypt, and Venezuela and holds law degrees from Utrecht University and a Master of Science from the University of Wales.
Professor Hey’s research interests include international institutional law, in particular the accountability of international organizations, and international natural resources law. Together with Professors Daniel Bodansky (University of Georgia, USA) and Jutta Brunnée (University of Toronto, Canada), she is the editor of the Oxford Handbook of International Environmental Law (Oxford University Press, 2007). She is the Director of the School of Law’s Research Master on Justice and Safety & Security (launched in September 2008) and the Editor in Chief of Erasmus Law Review and a member of the Editorial Board of the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law. She is a member of the Advisory Board on Legal Aspects of Water Management, which advises the Dutch government and parliament.
